Writing Prompt: The Summer Song

“Last summer everybody was listening to that song. It was playing everywhere”

Last summer the brilliant song by DNCE, “Cake by the Ocean”, was playing everywhere you could find a radio; -When you went shopping you could hear it in the background. When you were out driving it would play on the radio, and if you were driving long enough you would even hear it more than once. Even my mother would start playing it on her phone; when she was cooking, cleaning or even taking a shower. -And so, this passed down to my little brother and sister. Therefore now, it was not only playing on the radio in stores, public places and in the car, because that wasn’t enough. -No, it had to be on every minute of the day.

At the beginning it was a good song and it was the kind of song, that would bring you into the summer spirit and it made you want to get up and dance. But not so much anymore, now the lyrics are stuck inside your head and it is like, when you have watched the same movie over and over again and you know all the lines and scenes, and nothing will surprise you. Even to this day, when I think about the song, the lyrics will pop back into my head, like a crocodile suddenly popping out of the water to attack.

Writing Prompt: Music

“Music produces a kind of pleasure which human nature cannot do without”

-Confucius, The Book of Rites.

Music can do a lot to people and only by sounds it awakens feelings inside you, which is hard to explain. Certain types of music can make you feel happy, sad, emotional or angry. Music has a power to affect us, and I think that there is not one person on the plant, that cannot be affected in some way emotionally by the sound of music. Music has been among us for millions of years. From drumming on a pair of rocks, to drumming on a drum as we know it today, music and instruments has been developed and continues to developed, simply because humans cannot live without music. We hear music almost everywhere we go, when we are driving, shopping in the supermarket, doing sports or whatever, music will always be in the background of our minds. We have even created music for events, holidays, seasons and even to represent the country we live in.

Song that represents Dr. Kurtz

Representing the song and the character, Dr. Kurtz

I have chosen a song by Kenneth Bruce Gorelick or better known as “Kenny G”, called The Moment. Kenny G was born in 1956 in Seattle and he is the biggest selling instrumental musician and best-selling artist with more than 75 million records.

I think that this song The Moment, represents the character Dr. Kurtz from the book Where’d you go Bernadette? written by Maria Semple. It is a good representation, as Dr. Kurtz is a very good and recommended doctor. She is very calm, friendly, and professional, and I think that these qualifications are very well represented by the melody Kenny G is playing throughout the track.

For a character like Dr. Kurtz it is very important to be calm and professional, when chaos arises among others and they are in need of her help. Here the melody also has this calmness to it. Around the middle of the song (2:39), the melody changes and he plays deeper tones, and this can be linked to how Dr. Kurtz takes the assignment and works with it. Then the tones goes up again and this represents, how she is succeeding with the task and then the melody becomes the same again. Also the fact that the melody is almost the same throughout the song, can be compared to how Dr. Kurtz “takes up the assignment”, works with it, succeeds and then she takes on the next one.

Personal Response – Motivating a new generation?

“The key to revitalizing a language is by motivating a new generation of speakers”

Learning a new language is always difficult and challenging, but it is possible if you practice and put your mind up to it.

It is said that the younger you are, the quicker and faster you are at learning. And today, for example with the English language, they already start learning it at a younger age, than when I went to the Danish Folkeskole. After the new reform of the Danish school, children start learning English already in 1st grade. -Of course it is not as “technical” and grammar based as it will be in 3rd grade and up, but they still learn the very basics of the English language. At the beginning, when I heard about the new reform, I was a little bit surprised of how early they were going to learn English.

I have a little sister and brother myself, who are in 3rd -and 4th grade, and they have had English for one and two years now. Especially hearing from my little sister, she is very happy to have and learn English and even though she is only nine years old, she is already getting a good idea of how English works.

Therefore, I think that by learning English earlier than you normally would, will help to expand the skills and the capabilities of speaking the language. Also the way the young children learn English, by including fun and games, will help motivate them to learn and speak English.

Personal Response – English the king of languages

“Riding the crest of globalization and technology, English dominates the world as no other language ever has, and some linguists now say it may never be dethroned as the king of languages”.

The world is continuously expanding and so is the knowledge of the people. Today we are more intertwined and connected with each other even though, we live on different places on the planet.

I agree with this stimulus, because today you will meet the English language in almost everything you do, even if you don’t live in an English speaking country. Because the communications and businesses have expanded as much as it has, all the countries today have connections to each other. But this does not only apply to international businesses and such, but also in our everyday lives.

Today when we use the internet and social media, words and things like “mail”, “Facebook”, “YouTube”, “like”, “share”, “tweet” etc. comes to mind and it has become “normal” words, which we understand and use every day. Even if we see a commercial from a store or restaurant, they would often use English words or even have an English name. Also when we speak to each other, we use a lot of English words. For example, when I talk to my little brother or sister, they would often use the word “nice” instead of the Danish word “sejt”, when they have done something fun or exciting.

English has for a long time been the king of the languages, and it is continuously expanding and becoming more and more popular among the people around the world.

Article from New York Times

“One Star Over, a Planet That Might Be Another Earth”

This article is about another Earth that could be circling the star right next door to us. Wednesday the 24th of October, astronomers have announced that they have detected a planet orbiting Proxima Centauri, which is the closets neighbor to our solar system.

The planet is located in a zone, where it neither may be too hot nor too cold. This means that liquid water could exist on the planet, which could also mean that there is a probability for life. Out from investigations, astronomers have determined that the planet is at least 1.3 times bigger than the mass of the Earth and a year on the planet, meaning the time it takes to complete one orbit around the star, will only last 11.2 days.

It is 4,2 light-years away from Earth, and it might someday, decades from now, be possible to reach it. However much is still to be investigated, because a lot is still unknown about this planet, and it could not even be like Earth, but more like Venus or Mars.

There is still no pictures of the planet, however is has been studied through telescopes. Therefore, Yuir Milner and Stephen Hawking have together announced a project to develop and launch a fleet of iPhone-size spacecraft within two to three decades.
